Freedom from Legalism

Chad Haygood

This past Sunday we heard from Paul's letter to the Colossians a warning against our legalistic tendencies. Unfortunately, we're all so prone to become legalistic. We love our laws. (Although we despise another's)

We're all susceptible to trying to earn God's favor. We need to break free from legalism. We need to look to Christ and become more reliant upon His grace that makes us pure and holy and acceptable.

Fighting for Joy?

Chad Haygood

Are your struggling for joy right now? You may be seeking God yet finding yourself without joy and carrying a heavy burden. I came across this quote from Martyn Lloyd-Jones today that should help us all in our fight for joy in God.

Why Believe the Bible?

Chad Haygood

Over the last few weeks of our study through the New Testament we have discovered verses in the Bible that are either omitted (Mark 7:16) or said to not be included in some of the earliest manuscripts (Mark 16:9-20). The obvious question that comes is, "How can we believe the Bible?" You may not have asked that question, but rest assured there are some who do or many who will.

The Gospel Coalition held their National Conference this week in Chicago. The theme this year was: "They Testify About Me: Preaching Jesus and the Gospel from the Old Testament".

A Call To Prayer

Josh Reynolds

JC Ryle shares some convicting words in his book, "A Call to Prayer".  We should ask ourselves as individual believers and as a church family, "Do we pray?" Here are a few excerpts to wet your appetite:

New Location!

Chad Haygood

We've moved! For over a year we met on an indoor tennis court at our 18th St. YMCA. This space served us so well during that year and we are very thankful that God provided it for us. However, God has opened up another meeting space for us! We are so excited about this opportunity and believe that it will serve us even better. Our new meeting place is still with the YMCA, but at their 16th Street location.

The book God's Statesman: The Life and Work of John Owen by Peter Toon describes the remarkable providence of God in saving the famous puritan, John Owen.

The Importance and Discipline of Reading

Josh Reynolds

I’ve recently been making my way through Mack Tomlinson’s new book, “In Light of Eternity: The Life of Leonard Ravenhill”. In this biography, Pastor Tomlinson sheds light on the spiritual life of Leonard Ravenhill. Along with D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones and J. Edwin Orr, Ravenhill was one of the few men in the 20th century who specialized in preaching and writing about genuine revival and spiritual awakening. Leonard Ravenhill was a godly man who was marked by a deep life of prayer, passionate evangelistic zeal and a powerful preaching gift.

Leading Family Worship

Josh Reynolds

Men, one of our primary responsbilities is to shepherd our families! All other duties in our Christian lives are insignificant compared to our role in the home. God has commanded us to lead, protect, and feed our wives and children. Throughout the history of the church, one of the means for a godly home, comes in the form of leading your family in worship. Our church will only be as strong and healthy as the men and families who comprise the local church.

Always Thankful

Chad Haygood

Are your words, attitudes, and deeds marked by grumbling and complaining or by thanksgiving? Complaining is a constant temptation, but because of the grace of Christ we should be marked by thanksgiving. The Apostle Paul certainly was:

First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you (Romans 1:8)

I give thanks to my God always for you (1 Corinthians 1:4)

I do not cease to give thanks for you (Ephesians 1:16)
